Q&AQuestions and Answers
Here are some questions and answers that may be helpful to those new to Z scale. For a more comprehensive listing of Z scale resources on the web and in print, please check our links page.

Q. Doesn't Z scale only have models of European trains?
A. This is perhaps one of the greatest misconceptions regarding Z scale. There are currently several companies that offer North American (NA) locomotives and rolling stock. You can see some of the current Z scale locomotives elsewhere on this site. In Z scale, we have begun to enjoy new releases on a regular basis and this trend will only increase in the upcoming months and years.

Q. What's the easiest way to get started in Z scale?
A. Both Marklin and Micro-Trains offer excellent Z scale starter sets. The Micro-Trains set includes their F7 diesel locomotive, freight cars, caboose and track. You must purchase a power pack separately. Marklin offers several starter sets that include the power pack as well as choice of locomotives.

Q. What kind of power pack can I use with Z scale trains?
A. A power pack with a maximum output of 10 Volts DC is recommended by Marklin. Marklin makes a power pack designed specifically for Z scale use, this is included with their starter sets. Many in the Z scale community have also used the MRC 1300 power pack, slightly modified, with great success. This MRC modification is simply a physical stop attached to the front of the power pack preventing the speed control knob from going beyond the 2:00 position.

Q. Is Z scale too small for me?

A. Z scale is, in effect, about 75% the size of N scale and it is enjoyed by people of all ages. Many people see the amazing detail that can be achieved in Z scale and think that it may be too difficult for them. An appreciation of beautiful trains and a desire to have fun, not your score on an eye chart, is the most important component of enjoying Z scale!

Q. How do I keep my trains running well?
A. Perhaps the most important aspect of good running Z scale trains is to keep the area around your trains clean. Material such as pet hair, loose scenery material and fabric fibers can get tangled around wheels and in to motors and affect your train's performance. Use common sense when setting up your trains, make sure it's in an area that is clean and free of obvious loose material.

Q. How do I keep my track clean?
A. Hundreds of articles have been written on this subject, and still even seasoned model railroaders have different cleaning methods. A good starting point for clean track is to make sure no loose material is on your track, then a light cleaning is next. A cleaning liquid such as 99.9% isopropyl alcohol and a lint free cloth wrapped around your finger will work. On relatively new track, this is usually sufficient.

Q. What are modules, and where can I see photos of them?
A. A modular layout (see photo above right) is in many respects the same as a conventional train layout, except that it is designed to mate up with other modules to form a larger, single operating layout. This is achieved by adhering to several sets of standards such as track placement, bench height and wiring connections. Modular layouts can also be operated on their own, effectively giving you two layouts in one. There are currently several Z scale modular groups (check our link page for a listing) that display their work at both local and national train shows.

Q. Are there any Z track based magazines?
A. Yes, Ztrack magazine is the North American based Z scale publication, this is published bimonthly. Model Railroader is featuring more and more Z scale features in their pages... another sign of Z scale's growing popularity!

Q. Where can I go for more Z scale information?
A. Among the best resources in Z scale model railroading are the people who share the hobby. Currently the most active spot online for Z scale information and support is the TrainBoard Z Scale Forum. This is an invaluable resource that warmly welcomes new Z scale users.
